Uniqueness
What makes Tanah Lot truly unique is its dramatic setting in the middle of the sea, giving it an almost mystical appearance, especially at high tide when the temple appears to be floating. During sunset, the combination of golden skies, crashing waves, and the silhouette of the temple creates an unforgettable view. The site also features a sacred freshwater spring beneath the temple, believed to have healing properties. Visitors can experience traditional Balinese ceremonies, explore the surrounding local markets, and enjoy a variety of seafood restaurants with stunning ocean views.
History of This Place
Tanah Lot Temple traces its origins back to the 16th century, when a revered Hindu priest, Dang Hyang Nirartha, traveled across Bali to spread Hindu teachings. During his journey, he arrived at the rocky coast of Beraban and was captivated by the beauty and spiritual energy of the location. He decided to meditate on the rock formation, believing it to be a sacred place blessed by the sea gods.
However, the local villagers and their chief opposed his presence and tried to drive him away. To demonstrate his divine power, Nirartha is said to have moved the rock into the sea with his spiritual energy and left behind his sacred scarf, which transformed into the legendary sea snakes that now guard the temple. Awed by this miracle, the villagers accepted the site as holy and built Tanah Lot Temple in honor of Dewa Baruna, the Balinese god of the sea.
Over the centuries, the temple has withstood powerful ocean waves and erosion. In the 1980s, a large restoration project was carried out with support from the Indonesian government and Japan, reinforcing the temple's foundation while preserving its cultural significance. Today, Tanah Lot remains one of Bali’s most visited and cherished spiritual landmarks, attracting both pilgrims and travelers seeking its breathtaking views and mystical aura.
